On Wednesday 7 May 2025, our head of democratic memory and transitional justice, Nadia Gayoso<\/strong>, was at the Provincial Council of Badajoz<\/strong> together with Manuel Candalija<\/strong>, Director of the Department of Culture, Sport and Youth, and Juan Francisco Ceballos<\/strong>, Head of the Historical and Democratic Memory Service, presenting the two activities that FIBGAR will carry out with this institution in the field of democratic memory and human rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first of these, held on 8 May, is an educational event entitled \u2018Exile and memory: lessons from the past for the present\u2019 to be held at the Mel\u00e9ndez Vald\u00e9s Secondary School in Villafranca de los Barros,<\/strong> in commemoration of the Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the victims of exile as a result of the Civil War and the dictatorship, as set out in article 8 of Law 20\/2022 on Democratic Memory. The aim of the project is to raise awareness among a group of 30 young people in the 4th year of ESO<\/strong> about the impact of Spanish exile during Franco’s regime, to encourage them to reflect on the connections between historical exile and current situations of forced displacement, and to foster critical thinking and empathy towards people in exile today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, on Friday 9 May, coinciding with Europe Day<\/strong>, we will carry out an integrated workshop entitled \u2018Democratic Memory: from the local to the European\u2019, at IES Extremadura in M\u00e9rida<\/strong>, aimed at 30 young people from 4th ESO and 1st Baccalaureate<\/strong>. On this occasion, the aim of the workshop is to make them understand what human rights are and their recent violation in the history of Spain, to identify current tools for the recovery of memory such as Memor\u00edzate<\/a><\/strong>, our democratic memory macro-project, to connect the national democratic memory with the European context, and to promote critical reflection and active participation among young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both initiatives follow a human rights-based teaching methodology<\/strong> through the implementation of interactive activities, allowing young people to feel part of their reality and also of what happened in their country and in Europe not so long ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an honour for FIBGAR to be able to develop activities dedicated to democratic memory for young people, and above all to be able to do so in collaboration with institutions that are committed to the teaching of memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
