The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly<\/strong> comes at a decisive moment for the international system. Under the motto \u201cTogether we are better: more than 80 years in the service of peace, development, and human rights\u201d<\/em>, the international community<\/strong> prepares to reflect on past achievements and, above all, to renew its commitment to a more inclusive, effective, and supportive multilateralism<\/strong>. The High-Level Week<\/strong>, held from 22 to 30 September 2025<\/strong>, highlights the urgency of delivering on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong> and revitalizing global cooperation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this same spirit, the recent High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)<\/a><\/strong>, held in July, concluded with a strong call from Member States<\/strong> to accelerate coordinated action toward the SDGs<\/strong>. The meeting underlined that while there is consensus on the need to move forward, commitments must translate into concrete and sustainable measures<\/strong> that align with the vision presented in the General Assembly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current situation, however, reflects the magnitude of the challenge: barely 17% of the goals are on track to be achieved by 2030<\/a>, while most show setbacks or insufficient progress. Adding to this, the worrying reduction of budgets in several donor countries<\/strong> disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable populations<\/strong>. This scenario reinforces the relevance of the High-Level Week<\/strong> as a key space to transform today\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, multilateralism<\/strong> faces unprecedented challenges that test its effectiveness. Increasing geopolitical fragmentation<\/strong>, the resurgence of national interests<\/strong> over global commitments<\/strong>, and simultaneous crises<\/strong> complicate the building of lasting consensus. International cooperation<\/strong> is constrained by political tensions, inequalities among countries, and the volatility of financial resources. This context makes clear that while the principles of solidarity<\/strong> and shared action<\/strong> remain fundamental, the practice of multilateralism requires renewal, flexibility, and real commitment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To respond to this need, the 80th session<\/strong> will feature two innovative spaces alongside the main meetings. On one hand, the SDG Media Zone<\/strong>, organized by the Department of Global Communications<\/strong>, will offer interviews, roundtables, and debates on concrete solutions from 22 to 26 September<\/strong>. On the other hand, the SDG Pavilion<\/strong>, convened by the UN Deputy Secretary-General<\/strong> and the Office of Partnerships<\/strong>, will bring together leaders and experts from 20 to 26 September<\/strong> for interactive dialogues and in-depth analysis. Both forums will be open to the world via UN WebTV<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Momentum toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong> will take center stage with the SDG Moment<\/strong>, designed to showcase initiatives that accelerate the 2030 Agenda<\/strong>. Added to this is the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Conference on Women<\/strong>, which will highlight both progress made and pending challenges in gender equality<\/strong> and the empowerment of women and girls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional General Debate<\/strong> will once again serve as the stage for Heads of State and Government<\/strong> to express national priorities and shared visions in the face of interlinked crises. Among the thematic dialogues, the Climate Summit<\/strong> stands out as a key milestone ahead of COP30 in Brazil<\/strong>, as well as the first biennial meeting on a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient global economy<\/strong>, focused on financing for development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health<\/strong> and youth<\/strong> will also occupy a central place. Discussions will address the prevention of non-communicable diseases<\/strong>, the promotion of mental health<\/strong>, and the future of the World Programme of Action for Youth<\/strong>, which marks its 30th anniversary<\/strong>. Meanwhile, nuclear disarmament<\/strong> will be reaffirmed as a global goal, alongside attention to humanitarian crises<\/strong>, particularly the situation of the Rohingya Muslims<\/strong> and other minorities in Myanmar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Altogether, the 2025 High-Level Week<\/strong> not only commemorates eight decades of multilateralism<\/strong>, but also seeks to renew political and civic momentum<\/strong> to advance in peace, equality, health, and sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
