On November 4, from 16:00 to 20:00<\/strong>, in the Ernest Lluch Hall of the Spanish Congress in Madrid<\/strong>, we will hold the event \u201cThe Future of Universal Jurisdiction\u201d<\/strong>, where we will examine the progress, challenges, and opportunities of this fundamental principle of international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative is part of the campaign \u201cDemocracy is not inherited. It is built. Make noise.\u201d<\/strong>, which reminds us that democracy is not a passive legacy, but a collective construction that requires commitment, participation, and active defense of human rights against impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madrid-Buenos Aires Principles<\/strong>, which we developed ten years ago, laid the groundwork for the consolidation of universal jurisdiction in Spain and Latin America. At this event, we will review their impact and explore new perspectives for their development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will be joined by experts and jurists who have shaped the evolution of universal jurisdiction. Baltasar Garz\u00f3n Real<\/strong>, Honorary President, and Eugenio Ra\u00fal Zaffaroni<\/strong>, Emeritus Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, will share their views on the relevance of this principle for global justice. Jorge Rodr\u00edguez Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, and Mat\u00edas Bailone<\/strong>, Legal Secretary of the Supreme Court of Justice of Argentina, will also participate, analyzing the legal challenges and development perspectives of universal jurisdiction, comparing the Spanish experience with the Latin American context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will also address the need for legislative reforms in Spain<\/strong> to strengthen this mechanism. Enrique Santiago Romero<\/strong>, Justice Spokesperson of the Plurinational Parliamentary Group SUMAR, and Dolores Delgado Garc\u00eda<\/strong>, Prosecutor of the Human Rights and Democratic Memory Division, will examine the necessary legal changes to ensure that universal jurisdiction fully serves its function of protecting victims and preventing impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will also recognize the role of civil society<\/strong> in promoting international justice. B\u00e9n\u00e9dict De Moerloose<\/strong>, lawyer and NGO consultant, Esteban Beltr\u00e1n<\/strong>, Director of Amnesty International Spain, and Alessia Schiavon<\/strong>, Director of FIBGAR, will share their experience on how organizations and social movements contribute to raising awareness of international crimes and strengthening accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
