Following several months of analysis, research and data collection, we are pleased to announce that the report \u201cCultivating Democracy: Recipes for Resilience\u201d <\/strong>has now been published and is freely available to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This document, part of our project<\/a> co-funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, aims to identify the main challenges facing democracy in Spain <\/strong>and propose concrete tools and strategies to strengthen it collectively. Far from being a pessimistic assessment, the report seeks to serve as a roadmap for organisations, institutions and citizens who wish to actively contribute to a more robust, inclusive and resilient democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To this end, a range of activities have been carried out, resulting in a detailed report on the state of Spain\u2019s democratic resilience from various perspectives, analysing three key pillars of democracy: justice and accountability, freedom of expression and information, and citizen participation and inclusion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, a wide range of sources<\/strong> providing concise figures and data on the state of democracy in the country were analysed. These include reports produced by the European Commission, GRECO, the OECD, the Spanish Youth Council and Transparency International, amongst others. The analysis of these sources enabled us to construct a comparative and well-founded assessment of the state of democracy in Spain, identifying both its strengths and its most vulnerable areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, an exhaustive mapping exercise <\/strong>was carried out, identifying six experts in the subjects studied, with the aim of interviewing them about the country\u2019s democratic situation. Their voices provided a fundamental qualitative perspective: drawing on practical experience and specialist knowledge, each interviewee shed light on aspects that quantitative data alone cannot capture. Thanks to these interviews, it has been possible to articulate a more specific and nuanced picture of the democratic situation in Spain, which complements and enriches the contextual analysis of national and international sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, a collective working session<\/strong> <\/a>was held on 12 March 2026, bringing together various civil society organisations working in the fields of justice and accountability, freedom of expression and information, and citizen participation and inclusion. The exchange between these organisations proved particularly valuable: by sharing their experiences and day-to-day difficulties, it was possible to map out the shared challenges and opportunities for collaboration. The aim of this workshop was to summarise the challenges faced by civil society organisations working on the front line to defend democracy across the various areas studied, and its outcome has been key to shaping the report\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result of this entire process is a report that not only describes but also proposes. Throughout its pages, there are practical recommendations<\/strong> aimed at both institutional actors and civil society, designed to strengthen each of the three areas analysed. We trust that this document will become a useful resource for those who work day in, day out to preserve and expand democratic spaces. Cultivating democracy is, ultimately, a collective and ongoing task<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
