On 12 May, our honorary president Baltasar Garz\u00f3n<\/strong> travelled, alongside Nadia Gayoso<\/strong>, FIBGAR\u2019s head of democratic memory, to the University of Granada, where they took part in the eighth Day of Truth<\/strong>. This Day of Truth is an initiative organised by the university\u2019s own G.W. Leibniz Chair<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was opened with a few words from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Teresa Ortega, and moderated by the director of the G.W. Leibniz Chair, Juan Antonio Nicol\u00e1s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltasar Garz\u00f3n then gave his lecture \u201cStrategic disinformation: the influence of hoaxes on the administration of justice\u201d<\/strong>, during which he provided a chronological overview of the various milestones that have marked contemporary history in terms of the impact of hoaxes and their effect on justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a short break, Nadia Gayoso gave her lecture \u201cDemocratic memory in the face of post-truth: challenges and responsibilities\u201d<\/strong>, in which she highlighted how memory can serve as a tool against post-truth, disinformation and media illiteracy, and how citizens can contribute to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the event concluded with an interview with Baltasar Garz\u00f3n conducted by Luc\u00eda Ballesteros-Aguayo<\/strong>, a journalist and lecturer at the University of M\u00e1laga. During the interview, they discussed, amongst other topics, the nature of truth and falsehood, and the legal measures provided for in Spain\u2019s legal system to combat disinformation and post-truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event highlights the need to create spaces for debate on the challenges and opportunities presented by social media and digital platforms<\/strong>, particularly in the current climate where polarisation, hate speech and hoaxes are flooding these channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
