The International Day of Peace<\/strong> comes at a time when armed conflicts continue to shape the global landscape. According to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)<\/em><\/a>, armed conflict was recorded in 49 states in 2025, while the number of interstate armed conflicts doubled from three to six compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observed every year on 21 September, the International Day of Peace<\/em><\/a> provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of peace and all the challenges that threaten it. In 2026, the United Nations marks the day under the theme \u201cInvest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day<\/strong>\u201d, highlighting that peace requires continuous efforts by governments, institutions and societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the consequences of armed conflicts rarely remain confined to the territories in which they take place. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one example of how prolonged violence can contribute to wider regional instability and have consequences beyond national borders. In June 2026, the United Nations Secretary-General<\/em><\/a> warned that escalation in the Middle East can affect countries far beyond the region through political tensions, displacement, insecurity, international trade routes and rising food and fuel costs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation in Gaza illustrates the serious humanitarian consequences of prolonged armed conflict. According to a September 2026 report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)<\/em><\/a>, civilians continue to face displacement and significant challenges in accessing essential services. In Gaza, 91 per cent of assessed households face moderate to high water insecurity, while shortages of medical supplies and overcrowded displacement sites continue to place additional pressure on the population. These conditions highlight the close relationship between peace and the protection of fundamental rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond their immediate humanitarian consequences, armed conflicts also challenge the international framework designed to preserve peace and security. The International Committee of the Red Cross<\/em> (ICRC)<\/em><\/a> has stressed that humanitarian assistance cannot replace respect for international humanitarian law or political efforts to de-escalate conflicts. The ICRC has also warned that further escalation can lead to more deaths and injuries, displacement and severe disruption of essential services such as healthcare, water and electricity. Lasting peace therefore requires more than an end to hostilities<\/strong>. It also depends on the protection of civilians, respect for international law and sustained political efforts to prevent further escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preventing conflict before violence escalates is therefore an essential part of investing in peace. The World Bank<\/em><\/a> emphasizes that efforts to strengthen social cohesion can help build trust within communities and between citizens and public institutions, while addressing some of the underlying drivers of fragility, conflict and violence. Strong and inclusive institutions, access to essential services and opportunities for participation can contribute to more resilient societies and reduce the risk of tensions developing into violence. Investing in peace therefore also means investing in the social and institutional conditions that make peaceful societies possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The importance of prevention is also highlighted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development<\/em> (OECD<\/em>)<\/a>, which identifies conflict prevention as an essential component of both peace and human security. At the same time, resources dedicated to peace and conflict prevention in contexts affected by high and extreme fragility remain at one of the lowest levels in two decades. This gap illustrates the importance of investing in preventive measures before tensions develop into violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this background, the theme of this year\u2019s International Day of Peace, \u201cInvest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day<\/em><\/a>,\u201d takes on particular significance. Investing in peace means not only responding to conflicts once violence has begun, but also strengthening the conditions that can prevent them. This includes protecting human rights, supporting dialogue and cooperation, building institutions that people can trust and ensuring that individuals can live in safety and dignity. Peace is therefore not solely the responsibility of governments and international institutions. Civil society, local communities and individuals also play an important role in promoting dialogue, overcoming divisions and contributing to more peaceful societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Day of Peace is therefore not only a moment of reflection, but also a reminder that peace requires continuous commitment. In a world marked by persistent armed conflicts, protecting human rights, respecting international law and strengthening dialogue remain essential. Peace must be built and protected every day, through cooperation, prevention and a shared commitment to human dignity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
