Launch event: Spain and global justice with a gender perspective

Next Tuesday, 28 April 2026, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, the event “Spain as a promoter of the gender perspective in the fight against impunity: a strategic assessment from the perspective of global justice” will be held in the AECID Auditorium (Av. Reyes Católicos 4, Madrid).

The event forms part of the project of the same name, an initiative launched with the aim of rigorously analysing Spain’s role in promoting a gender-based approach in the fight against impunity for international crimes. This project responds to the need to strengthen the incorporation of the gender perspective into global justice mechanisms, particularly in a context where, despite normative and institutional advances, significant challenges remain in recognising and prosecuting sexual and gender-based violence as an integral part of international crimes.

Through applied research carried out by our team, the project has combined documentary analysis, a review of Spanish diplomatic practice, interviews with key stakeholders and a participatory validation process. This approach has enabled us to produce a comprehensive assessment of Spain’s position and capacities in this field, as well as to identify specific opportunities to strengthen its contribution to a more inclusive and gender-sensitive global justice system.

In this context, the event on 28 April serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, to present the main findings of the research, including key insights and strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening Spain’s role as a key player in promoting a gender-sensitive approach in the fight against impunity. On the other hand, to create a space for dialogue that goes beyond the presentation of results, fostering dialogue among diverse actors and promoting the building of alliances.

The conference thus seeks to create a space for debate, sharing experiences and generating new strategies that enable progress towards a more just, equitable and inclusive global justice system. At a time when the international community faces complex challenges in the field of human rights, such spaces are essential for articulating collective responses and strengthening the commitment to the principles of justice and accountability.

Furthermore, the event aims to foster an environment of connection between civil society actors, public institutions, international organisations and the academic community. This relational dimension is key to driving joint action and fostering synergies that contribute to greater effectiveness in policies and strategies on international justice with a gender perspective.

The project aligns with the objectives of Spanish foreign policy, in particular the promotion of a feminist foreign policy and the strengthening of the multilateral system. In this regard, Spain has a significant opportunity to consolidate its leadership in promoting inclusive approaches to global justice, by mainstreaming the gender perspective across its diplomatic and cooperation activities.

The initiative has been co-funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, through the Secretariat of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, reflecting the institutional commitment to promoting human rights and gender equality at the international level.

The event is open to anyone interested in international justice, human rights and gender equality, although registration is mandatory. Those interested should complete the registration form via the link provided.

This conference will not only present the results of a strategic study but will also help to stimulate debate and strengthen a network of actors committed to building a more equitable global justice system. In short, it is a space to reflect collectively on the progress made, identify the challenges ahead and jointly chart the way forward.

The event on 28 April in Madrid thus presents a key opportunity to place the gender perspective at the heart of the fight against impunity, reinforcing Spain’s role as an active agent in promoting a more inclusive and transformative international justice system.
