Working on Our Upcoming International Criminal Justice Congress

At FIBGAR, we have been working for several months on the development of our upcoming project: the International Criminal Justice Congress: Progress and Challenges in the Fight Against Impunity. The primary objective of this event is to create a space for analysis, reflection, and dialogue on the current challenges facing international criminal justice, with particular focus on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the fight against impunity.

International criminal justice is at a decisive moment. Despite the progress achieved since the establishment of the ICC and other international tribunals, significant obstacles remain that compromise its effectiveness. In recent years, the ICC has faced political attacks, geopolitical tensions, and serious difficulties in securing state cooperation, which have limited its capacity to investigate and prosecute international crimes, particularly in contexts of prolonged impunity and complex armed conflicts. These challenges highlight the urgent need to create spaces for debate and collaboration where achievements can be evaluated and strategies designed to strengthen global accountability.

Our congress is conceived as a meeting point for academics, legal practitioners, journalists, activists, NGO representatives, human rights defenders, public officials, and anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the current state of international criminal justice. Through roundtables, expert panels, and specialized discussions, key issues will be addressed, including the prosecution of international crimes, victims’ rights, international cooperation, and the structural challenges that hinder the effectiveness of global justice mechanisms.

This initiative is strategically designed to raise awareness of the importance of combating impunity and to update the training of those working in the field of law and international justice. In a global context marked by new conflicts and the resurgence of practices that threaten the fundamental principles of international criminal law, this congress represents a unique opportunity to generate proposals that strengthen the structure and effectiveness of global justice.

The project has the support of the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) and the ICAB Commission on International Criminal Justice and Human Rights, institutions that bring their experience and specialized knowledge in international law and human rights. Additionally, it is co-funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, through the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs and Global Affairs, reinforcing its strategic character and alignment with objectives to strengthen justice and human rights at the international level.

At FIBGAR, we view this congress not only as an academic space but also as a forum to generate synergies among different actors, identify common challenges, and develop practical solutions. The active participation of experts, academics, legal practitioners, journalists, activists, and civil society representatives will enrich the debate, combine diverse perspectives, and build a comprehensive approach that strengthens accountability and effective justice worldwide.

Ultimately, our work on this congress reflects FIBGAR’s commitment to defending human rights, combating impunity, and strengthening international justice mechanisms. We invite everyone interested in these topics to follow the upcoming updates closely and join this project, which aims not only to analyze the current situation but also to generate concrete proposals that contribute to consolidating international criminal justice in the coming years.

In the coming weeks, we will share more information about the full congress program, the speakers participating in panels and roundtables, and the details for registration. This project represents a unique opportunity for those wishing to stay updated on the progress and challenges of international criminal justice and to participate in building a stronger, fairer, and more effective system.
