FIBGAR launches “Voices in Motion”, a webinar series on democracy and human rights in Latin America
The International Foundation Baltasar Garzón (FIBGAR), through the Alerta LATAM Observatory, is launching Voices in Motion, a webinar series designed to open up a space for dialogue and exchange on the main challenges facing democracy and human rights in Latin America.
The initiative aims to connect experiences, raise awareness of shared issues and promote rigorous and accessible discussions on matters shaping the present and future of the region. To this end, the series will bring together young professionals who conduct research, litigate, communicate or work in these fields across different Latin American countries, bringing new perspectives and experiences into public debate.
Five conversations on the challenges facing Latin America
The Voices in Motion webinar series will address a range of issues linked to the Alerta LATAM Observatory’s areas of work: democratic challenges; freedom of expression; democratic memory and justice processes in the region; the environment and Indigenous communities; and economic, social and cultural rights.
The series is structured around five conversations:
Democratic Alert: on current challenges to democracy in Latin America. The first meeting will focus on the criminalisation of critical voices, SLAPPs and lawfare in the region.
Strategic Silence: focusing on the consequences of systematic attacks on freedom of expression.
What Memory Demands: dedicated to memory, truth, justice and reparation processes.
Contested Territory: addressing the environment and the rights of Indigenous communities.
Rights in Resistance: exploring inequality and economic, social and cultural rights in the region.
Through these meetings, the Observatory aims to offer a regional perspective that makes it possible to analyse challenges beyond national borders, share experiences and build connections among those working to defend human rights and strengthen democracy.
First meeting: Democratic Alert
The series will begin on 16 November at 18:00 (Madrid time, UTC+1) with the webinar Democratic Alert: Criminalisation of Critical Voices, SLAPPs and Lawfare: What Is at Stake in Latin America Today?
The session will address the challenges posed by the criminalisation of critical voices, the use of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) and lawfare—phenomena that can affect the exercise of freedom of expression, civic participation and civic space.
The webinar will feature the following speakers:
Martín Consoli, lawyer working at the Human Rights Office of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPA) in Argentina, FIBGAR collaborator and Alerta LATAM Coordinator.
Javier Graña, lawyer specialising in human rights, FIBGAR collaborator and Alerta LATAM Coordinator.
Federica Carnevale, legal expert with a Master’s degree in Governance and Human Rights, Project Manager at FIBGAR and Alerta LATAM Coordinator.
The webinar will be held online and advance registration will be required.
Through Voices in Motion, FIBGAR and the Alerta LATAM Observatory reaffirm their commitment to generating knowledge, exchanging experiences and building regional networks in defence of human rights and the rule of law.
The series aims to highlight the perspectives of a new generation of Latin American professionals and contribute to an informed, critical and pluralistic public conversation about the challenges facing the region.
