FIBGAR and ELSA Barcelona UB: The “SLAPPs: new forms of abuse of the law”
In the framework of the PATFOXproject, last May 17 2023 we gave the virtual conference “SLAPPs: new forms of abuse of the law”, organized with the support of ELSA Barcelona UB.
ELSA is an international, independent, non-political and non-profit organization, run by and for students and recent graduates, who are interested in achieving academic and personal excellence, in addition to their legal or law-related studies at university.
ELSA aims to provide its members with a platform to develop their existing skills and acquire new ones, to interact with other students and experienced professionals from different states and legal systems across Europe, and to be equipped for a professional life in an international environment, through mutual understanding, intercultural cooperation and the wide variety of activities and projects offered by the Association.
Therefore, the objective of the seminar was to raise awareness of the dangers posed by SLAPPs among young legal professionals.
The term SLAPP is not yet being addressed in law schools. However, it is critical to provide SLAPP training to law students and young professionals so that they can identify legal actions against public participation and are better prepared to defend potential victims. It will also ensure that future lawyers maintain high ethical standards in their legal practice.
During the conference, participants explored the significance of the SLAPPs phenomenon, as well as reflected on the scope of these abuses of the law and the judicial system. In addition, participants engaged in a discussion on the consequences in terms of the rule of law, democracy and human rights.
