ADHEU – Refresher course on human rights in the European Union framework

ADHEU – Refresher course on human rights in the European Union is a project co-funded by the State Secretariat for the European Union of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

Through this project, FIBGAR proposes to organize a legal refresher course on recent developments in European law related to human rights aimed at students and professionals with special interest in the issues addressed.

Since the European Union law is dynamic and constantly changing, it is essential that professionals are kept updated on current legislative issues, since, in the last European legislature, various legislative initiatives have been adopted that will mark the European and national debate in the coming years, such as the Directive on Due Diligence of companies on sustainability or the Directive on the protection of persons participating in public life against manifestly unfounded claims or abusive legal proceedings.

For this reason, the course aims to provide an in-depth and quality update on the main novelties adopted by the last European legislature, with a practical emphasis based on human rights, and from the hand of professional specialists in each of the subjects to be covered.

The initiative is aimed at students in legal or related subjects, civil servants, and professionals from various disciplines who need to keep abreast of developments in the European Union and who are interested in having more tools for understanding and addressing current issues related to human rights.

In particular, it aims to address three fundamental aspects: the relationship between business and human rights (the Due Diligence Directive for companies, the European Law on Artificial Intelligence, the Law on Digital Services); the current challenges of freedom of expression and information (anti-SLAPP Directive and the European Law on Freedom of the Media) and the progressive harmonization of criminal law in the European Union (the Directive on Environmental Crimes, the Directive on Trafficking in Human Beings, the Directive on Gender Violence).

The course will be held in Madrid on October 21, 22 and 23, 2024. Further information will be communicated shortly.
