“Guardians of the Planet: The Rights of Indigenous Peoples”, was a project co-financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, which aimed to carry out activities to promote and disseminate human rights and, more specifically, the rights of indigenous peoples.
Today there are more than 476 million indigenous people, representing 6.2% of the world’s population. Thanks to their harmonious relationship with nature stemming from their wisdom and ancestral practices, 80% of the world’s biodiversity is safeguarded in their territories, making a crucial contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 13-Climate Action and SDG 15-Protection of terrestrial ecosystems.
However, much of civil society is unaware of the rights of these peoples, as well as the challenges they face and the invaluable contribution they make to the protection of the environment and the planet’s biological diversity.
Seeking to fill the existing knowledge gap, as well as the lack of training, promotion and dissemination offers, FIBGAR proposed:
(1) favor learning spaces on the relevance of indigenous peoples through the realization of a free massive online course on the subject;
(2) amplify indigenous voices through interviews with representatives of different communities;
(3) raise awareness and sensitize civil society through the implementation of a campaign on social networks (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram) and the realization of a virtual event.
