Scholarship Programme for Indigenous and Afro-descendant Students
Education / Human rights
Against a backdrop marked by democratic crises, setbacks in fundamental rights, disinformation and armed conflicts on a global scale, it is more necessary than ever to foster a democratic culture amongst the younger generations, based on respect for human rights and an understanding of our democratic memory.
Democratic memory is not merely the recollection of a past marked by injustices and resistance, but also an educational and transformative tool for understanding current challenges and defending free, equal and just societies. For young people aged 15 to 17, at a crucial stage in the formation of their identity and citizenship, this learning takes on particular significance.
This project aims to bring democratic memory closer to secondary school pupils in the province of Badajoz through a series of visits to secondary schools structured around an educational escape room, using active methodologies that promote critical thinking, intergenerational dialogue and the development of citizenship, culminating in a democratic memory trail created collectively.
Promoting democratic memory in Badajoz not only helps to strengthen the educational and community fabric, but also provides young people with the tools to interpret their surroundings, recognise the importance of justice and equality, and become active participants in building a citizenry committed to democratic values.
To this end, this project includes, amongst other activities, the organisation of two rounds of workshops in eight secondary schools across the province of Badajoz and the publication of a ‘Route of Democratic Memory’ for the province.
To this end, between the two rounds of workshops – held in October and November respectively – teachers will be required to guide pupils in researching an event or site of democratic memory within their local area, with the aim of creating the Route of Democratic Memory, which will be published on the Badajoz Provincial Council’s website.
This approach enables pupils not only to receive information on democratic memory and human rights, but also to become active participants who understand the history of their local area and develop as critical thinkers who uphold democratic values.
